Crafting Basics
What grades of gear are there in The Old Republic?
In order of rarity: Cheap, Standard, Premium, Prototype, Custom, and Artifact.
When can I start to gather materials (mats)?
All starting worlds allow access to the fleet as early as level 1, allowing you to train your skills of choice. There are no gather nodes on the starter worlds, but those that train bio-analysis and scavenging can gather material from some animal and droid kills, respectively. True gather nodes do not being showing up until your respective faction’s capital planet.
When can I start to craft?
Unlike most MMO’s, in TOR you send your companion to craft, rather than do it yourself. This means you can do crafting while offline, RPing, questing, or any other activity. Of course, you must actually have a companion to do so. Many characters meet and even work with their companions before they officially join up. You can check this by opening your crew skills window (default N) and checking your companion. If it is listed as a guest, you cannot craft yet. Most classes will get their first companion at the end of their starter world’s class story.
What is Reverse Engineering? (RE)
You craft based off schematics purchased from your crew skills trainer to level up crafting. Each time you make one of these Premium, you can RE it. This gives you a chance to learn a better schematic (Prototype), as well as return some of the mats you used to make the original, green item.
Premium Items RE to Prototype schematics which make Prototype items which RE to Artifact schematics.
There are also Prototype schematics that can be purchased from your crew skills vendor, which follow the same rules listed above.
Can I RE items that I find?
You can, if you have the correct crafting skill, but you will only get mats from doing so. Only crafted items RE’d can lead to new schematics.
How fast can I craft?
Each companion can queue up to five crafting jobs, though you cannot queue missions or gathering. From levels 1-20 you may have two companions working simultaneously, this increases to three at level 21, four at level 31, and five at level 41. By level 50, you will have five companions in addition to your ships crafting droid.
How do I level up crafting?
When you view your crafting menu, each item you can make has a color next to it. Gray, Green, Yellow, Orange and will only increase your skill if they are Green, Yellow, or Orange. At some point, if you do not visit a crew skills trainer, you will max your level out. Just be sure to hit the crew skills trainer every 20 crafting levels and you’ll be fine.
I don’t want to Craft. What skills should I take?
Slicing is always a credit maker. Archeology , Underworld Trading, and Scavenging can net you mats used by four of the six skills, and can be sold or traded to crafters. Also, it helps reduce the cost of buying crafted gear if you can provide some of the components.
I’m class X. My companion has bonuses to X. What should I take?
Whatever you enjoy.
What is Custom armor and how can I make it?
Custom armor is crafted armor with four empty modification slots. For every Premium piece of armor in TOR, there is a duplicate Custom crafted armor. This allows you to keep the look you want by upgrading the modification slots.
Both Armormech and Synthweaving can make Custom gear for all classes, provided they have the schematic. Schematics can be found through Underworld Trading missions.
